Resume Do's  and Don'ts

Do:

  • Use a font and size that is easily read

  • Indicate name, current address and all telephone numbers that a potential employer could call.

  • Use strong action words emphasizing effectiveness. Example: say “coordinated”, not “responsible for”.

  • Edit at least four times:

    • First, check to tighten phrases and unnecessary words (a, the.)

    • Second, eliminate unnecessary items and accent the essential information. For example, it is unnecessary to write that a director of food service “manages food service operations, maintains policies and procedure”.

    • Third, proofread for spelling and correct grammarDo not rely on Microsoft Word to make all of the corrections.

    • Lastly, put the resume aside.  Let others critique it, then reread and edit the fourth time.

Don't:

  • Don’t include salary history or requirements.

  • Don’t include an Objective. It limits your opportunities within an organization.

  • Don’t indicate the reason for leaving a previous job.

  • Don’t leave gaps. Explain work absences, dual jobs, company name changes.

  • Don’t indicate any personal information: Age, race, religious, political, marital or family information.

  • Don’t use acronyms (DFS, QSR). The reader may not know what they represent.

  • Don’t state “references available upon request”. Of course, you will give  a reference!

  • Don’t misstate or exaggerate anything on your resume.  The world is very small.

  • Don’t expect a resume to get you the job. It will only open doors for an interview.
